It appears that KPop is taking over North America, and I'm not gonna lie, I like it!
If you are unfamiliar with the term, KPop refers to the Korean Pop Music scene that takes over the stages, clubs, and classrooms of South Korea.
This scene rivals that in any other developed country, and has such a loyal following, that you would be hard-pressed to hear a North American playlist anywhere other than the expat areas of the country. The wide array of girl groups, boy bands, cheesy male soloists, and ballad belting females coming from the small nation is astounding. Even more astounding however, are the perfectly coreographed dance moves, the hard-to-watch-but-can't-look-away levels of cheese, and the clothing that looks like a five year dressed themselves in the dark.
Don't get me wrong, I am not mocking the KPop superstars, if anything, I am in awe of their moves (I wish I could dance have as well as these Korean Pop Stars!), their confidence, and the way that they put all of their ridiculousness out there seemingly without a care in the world!
Though superstars within their own boarders, it is rare for any South Korean band to reach any sort of fame outside of them. That is why I was shocked today — and delighted — to hear that Gangnam Style by PSY is actually near the TOP of the American Billboard Charts!
What!! Most people don't even know what the song means!
If you have been living under a rock, or just haven't watched it yet, check out the video below before you read on. Trust me, even if you currently hate the song, after watching the video you will be hooked.
Yup... that just happened...
Moving on. I am sure that you are now even more confused about the meaning behind the song than you were before, so let me fill you in.
Basically, PSY (no idea what that stands for by the way) is talking about how he wants a unique girl. Literally someone who is classy, kind, warm, and sweet during the day, but can get sexy (not revealing) and fun when the sun goes down. He describes himself as a normal guy, ready to love, who has "bulging ideas" instead to "bulging muscles". Nothing that groundbreaking...
The catchy chorus Oppan Gangnam Style literally means Older Brother is Gangnam Style. Before you freak out and think that this has some incestual meaning behind it, relax. In South Korea, the term Oppa is a title that younger girls bestow on men that they are close to who are a few years older than them. You could compare it to 'boyfriend' in English, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are dating.
Gangnam is the richest district in South Korea, full of million dollar condos, great clubs, expensive boutiques, exclusive restaurants, and a whole lot of plastic surgery.
So to sum up, this song is basically about a guy who is looking for a sweet, sexy lady who appreciates a slightly dorky guy who is rich.
Yup, KPop is not so different from NAPop.
