Early modernist Marc Chagall was known for presenting a playful, ethereal, richly hued version of the world through his work. He created art in virtually every medium possible, but this piece is from a series inspired by the romantic tale Daphnis & Chloe written by the Greek poet Longus in the second century. He created these beautiful illustrations — on display at the Art Gallery of Alberta until February 16, 2014 — at the beginning of his second marriage to the women who was to become the great love of his life.
