White-Washed and Empty

Book Burning Memorial             Berlin, Germany

This memorial is located in the middle of a square called Babelplatz, across from the Humboldt University, in the centre of Berlin.

It marks the spot where the first major Nazi book-burning took place in May of 1933.

A transparent window lays flush with the grey cobblestones revealing a stark white room with empty bookshelves. There are no stone statues and no plaques of explanation to accompany it.

Just the room. A quiet and ever present reminder of the evil that once happened in that place.
